Consumer demand is changing the marketplace, are you taking advantage of this opportunity?

Blog by Bill Gass, Director of Business Development

Consumers know that 90 percent of corn and 93 percent of soybeans grown in the US comes from genetically modified seed, which means that milk—except for milk that’s organically produced—is likely considered to be a GMO product. Many consumers are finding the price point for organic milk to be too high for their family to sustain, but they want something more than generic, conventional milk.

This is why we have seen that many dairy companies particularly in the Northeast and the West, have begun to explore a transition to offering non-GMO dairy. In addition, just recently the time requirement to switch to certified non-GMO dairy production has been reduced to 30 days versus the previous one year transition time. The biggest hurdle however, for many dairy operations is sourcing adequate supplies of non-GMO feed.

The two major yogurt brands, Dannon and Chobani are both working now on transitioning to non-GMO-fed milk this year. Both have made commitments to change their supply models and announced plans to find new sources of non-GMO feedstuffs. For more details check out this article: Dannon promises leap to non-GMO Feed.

We have also seen a direct impact on prices paid at the elevator for non-GMO corn in areas were the transition to dairy is gaining steam. If this is the case in your area, it may be a good time to reassess your strategy and to see what potential opportunities exist for non-GMO production.

The landscape in agriculture is changing in many ways, and we hope to be part of this change while offering information and assistance to our customers. For more information about transitioning to non-GMO,, check out this article: Should You Go Non-GMO?
